Rakshabandhan 2023: Rakshabandhan Rituals

Women begin Raksha Bandhan preparations days or even weeks in advance. They go shopping for Rakhi, the sacred thread wound around their brothers’ wrists. In recompense, the brothers take their sisters shopping.

In the morning, the siblings (brother and sister) and other family members convene. After lighting a diya in front of a deity, the women bind rakhi on their brothers’ wrists, apply tilak to their foreheads, and offer them sweets, dry fruits, and other gifts.

The sister prays for the well-being of her sibling while tying the Rakhi. The aarti thali is a platter with a lit lamp, flowers, candies, and other items.

In exchange, the sibling sends his sister sweets, dried fruits, and other items of a similar nature. The elders exchange hugs with the youngsters and then bless them. The brothers wear the Rakhi as a reminder and sign of respect for their sister’s affection for several days.

Raksha Bandhan History

Bhavishya Upanishad

Puranas, according to Indian scriptures, are the first to mention Rakhi. According to Bhavishya Purana, Gods and Demons engaged in combat. Gods were subjugated by demons, and the leader of the gods, Indra, was fleeing for his life when Indrani spotted him. Then, she fastened a mantra-chanted resham thread to his hand, and that day was the Purnima of the Shravan month.

This magical thread worked for Indra, allowing him to defeat Demons and reclaim his dominion ‘Swarg’. Since then, Shravan month Purnima has been known as Protection Day, and this ritual is known as Raksha Bandhan.

The Life Of Asurraj Bali

Another mythological narrative involves Asurraj Bali, the son of Bhakt Prahlad. According to legend, Bali conquered all lokas by acquiring immense power. To stop his cruelty, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Vaman and sent him to Patal loka.

In Patal Loka, Bali appeased Lord Vishnu by conducting penances and asked Lord Vishnu to reside in Patal Loka with him. The god Vishnu granted his request. To fulfil his desire, the Lord began to reside exclusively in Patal Lok, causing goddess Laxshmi to become concerned. Ultimately, Devarshi Narad proposed to the deity that they marry and he become her brother. This is the reason Lord Vishnu returned to his original home of Vaikuntha.

Tale From The Mahabharata

Even the Mahabharata contains a story about this festival. At the time Lord Krishna murdered Shishupal, one of his fingers was severed and blood began to flow. Drupadi just witnessed it, at which point she tore the fabric from her garment and tied it to Krishna’s finger. By granting her a favour in return, Krishna protected her during Vidyut sabha by giving her an unfinished textile to shield her from Dushasan, which was the pivotal event and true cause of the Mahabharata.
