I Love Reese’s Day is annually observed on May 18. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Day was established by the “Hershey Company” in 2010 to honour the world’s most popular candy. The company sponsored an online petition that was endorsed by 40,000 Reese’s fans who believed that the brand deserved its own holiday. Since their invention in 1928 by H.B. Reese, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups have been an American favourite. In fact, the confectionery is currently the best-selling item.
The background of I Love Reese’s Day
I Love Reese’s Day was conceptualised by “The Hershey Company.” May was selected due to its position between March and July, when National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day and Chocolate Day are celebrated, respectively.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup was developed by former Hershey Company employee Harry Burnett Reese. In 1917, Reese began working on a dairy farm owned by Hershey. During the 1920s, he transitioned to the company’s confectionery factory. During this period, Reese began making candy in his Hershey home’s basement.
Reese obtained the chocolate he used to encase his candies from “The Hershey Company.” In 1923, he founded the “H.B. Reese Candy Company” after leaving Hershey due to the success of his candy-making business. He maintained a close relationship with his former employer, however. Reese’s candy company was successful in producing a variety of candies, but it wasn’t until 1928 that his famous Peanut Butter Cups were produced. These eventually became his best-selling item. They were called “penny cups” because each was sold for a single cent.
When Reese passed away in 1956, his six sons inherited his business. In 1963, however, they sold “H.B. Reese Candy Company” to “Hershey’s Chocolate Company” for $23.5 million in stock. These shares are currently worth more than $1 billion.
