National Women Physicians Day 2024: The number of female doctors is growing in most Westernized countries in the world, according to reports, as chances for women in the medical industry have increased over the previous 150 years. Furthermore, there were more female medical students in the US in 2019 than there were male medical students.
The efforts of female doctors who persisted in the face of discouragement and toiled tirelessly to remove barriers that prevented them from offering the best care possible have enabled a change in the perception of gender empowerment, though it has taken some time.
National Women Physicians Day is observed today to commemorate and show respect for women who have worked in the medical industry in the past, present, and future.
National Women Physicians Day History
Elizabeth Blackwell, who gained notoriety for being permitted to enroll in medical school “as a joke,” became the first female graduate in American medical history in 1849, finishing top in her class and going on to become a highly esteemed physician. Blackwell had a significant role in starting the movement that allowed women to enter the medical field and subsequently achieve equality in it.
On February 3, National Women Physicians Day honors her contributions to advancing and paving the way for women in the medical field. This day, which Physician Moms Group established in 2016, honors the more than 170 years of work that have gone into enhancing the working environment for women physicians and removing gender-based barriers.
Take part in National Women Physicians Day to honor the achievements of women in the medical industry!

The Significance of National Women Physicians Day
It highlights discrimination in the medical industry.
Historically, men have controlled medicine. Women in these fields, particularly doctors, encounter difficulties and barriers that make it harder for them to enter the field. Moreover, women who work in healthcare still make less money than males.
It honors the accomplishments made by women to the field.
Patients treated by female physicians have better health outcomes, according to a 2017 Harvard study titled “Comparison of Hospital Mortality and Readmission Rates for Medicare Patients Treated by Male vs. Female Physicians.” Additionally, within the same institution, there was a significant decrease in both patient readmission and mortality rates.
Thirty percent of physicians are women.
Although women are slightly overrepresented in medical schools, males still make up the majority of doctors. The field is becoming more diverse overall. Black medical students surged by over 13 percent and Hispanic students by more than 15 percent between 2015 and 2017.
