World Sleep Day is observed annually on a different date in March, and this year’s date is March 17. Observations indicate that the date ranges from 10 to 20 March. Even though the date differs from year to year, the day is always observed. The holiday occurs on the Friday preceding the spring equinox. The World Sleep Day Committee of the World Sleep Day Society organizes the holiday. The day was created to highlight the significance of sleep and address prevalent sleep-related issues that plague a large portion of the population.
The background of World Sleep Day
Sleep is a state of natural relaxation. It aids in the regeneration and replenishment of the mind and body by inhibiting muscle movement and other inactive body senses. There are multiple stages of slumber, each with a unique function. The disruption of any of these phases can result in physical and/or mental disorders that affect every aspect of life.
The fact that sleep has such an impact on the mind and body leads us to the conclusion that sleep is essential; therefore, organizations such as the World Sleep Day Society felt obligated to establish this holiday in order to promote the significance of sleep.
Although everyone sleeps, each individual has a unique understanding of what occurs during sleep. Sleep is a temporary coma that enables the body to be both conscious and unconscious, according to some experts.
Numerous individuals have sleep-related issues that prevent them from entering this regenerative coma-like state, impairing their abilities. The World Sleep Society, which was founded in 2008, and the World Association of Sleep Medicine established World Sleep Day. (W.A.S.M.)
Since its inception, the purpose of the day has been to raise awareness of the need for adequate sleep to maintain good health and to bring together international and local organizations to work on sleep-related issues.
To support the cause, the day has been celebrated annually with a different theme. The day also educates individuals on various sleep disorders and solutions and encourages them to seek assistance.

How to Observe International Sleep Day
Enjoying World Sleep Day is a breeze! Just a few efforts toward healthful sleep can improve one’s quality of life. Consider the following methods to honor the occasion:
Take a Nap
Celebrate World Sleep Day by doing what everyone enjoys most at the end of the day: sleeping. Take the day off and snooze for as long as you like. Or, for something less extreme, consider taking a 20-minute power nap during your lunch break. If you feel revitalized afterward, then you required it.
Practice Sleep Hygiene
- Because children fall asleep so naturally when they are exhausted, adults may presume they should be able to do the same. But frequently they cannot! Similar to taking care of one’s physical body (by showering or brushing one’s teeth), a person’s sleep regimen may require some additional care and attention.
- The process of sleep hygiene enables the brain and body to relax and prepare for a restful night’s sleep. This includes healthful routines and relaxation techniques, such as:
- The circadian phases of the body function more effectively when bedtime and wake time are consistent each day.
- People who don’t get enough physical activity during the day may have trouble sleeping at night, so be sure to take a brisk walk or engage in other cardiovascular activity several hours before nightfall.
- As a stimulant, caffeine can stimulate the mind and body, so it’s best to avoid coffee, tea, and other caffeinated beverages at least 6 hours before slumber.
- Room temperature: maintain the bedroom between 60 and 67 degrees F or 16-19 degrees C
- Instead of expecting to fall slumber immediately, allow 30 minutes to wind down with soft music, light stretching, or a boring book.
- Dim the lights to signal to the brain that it is time to sleep.
- Unplug: At least 60 minutes before nighttime, turn off the computer, television, smartphone, and any other blue-light emitting devices, as the blue light can disrupt sleep rhythms.
- Meditation: deep breathing and mindfulness exercises before bedtime can help the brain release the day’s stress, paving the way for improved sleep.
Download an App for Sleep
Those in need of assistance with their slumber can utilize a smartphone application. Slumber, Calm, Sleep Cycle, and Reflectly are all devoted to either lulling the mind into slumber or measuring the circadian rhythms of sleep.
Participate in a Sleep Sensitization Event
On this day, contribute to a sleep-related fundraiser to help finance more research into sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia. Check for sleep-related events in your area or communicate with a sleeping foundation online.
Purchase a New Mattress
Many individuals grapple with sleep issues due to a lack of adequate support during sleep. Use World Sleep Day as a pretext to determine whether purchasing a new bed would improve sleep quality. Some luxury mattresses (such as Sleep Number) allow for customization based on the requirements of each individual.
Consult with a Sleep Professional
It is essential for those who believe they have a sleep disorder to consult a sleep professional. Ask if they would recommend a sleep test to make a diagnosis and if they have any recommendations for sleep hygiene.
