The background of National Underwear Day
National Pants Day was founded in 2003 by the brand Freshpair to promote a positive body image. National Pants Day has been celebrated annually on 5 August since the movement went viral.
In prehistoric periods, humans wore loincloths as their first form of undergarment. In the Middle Ages, men donned linen shorts known as ‘braies.’ Under their dresses, women donned a’shift’. In Britain, trousers consisted of lengthy drawers that covered the entire leg. (In truth, the term ‘panties’ originated from a shortened version of the word ‘pants.’) However, undergarments for women did not appear until the 19th century.
While the primary function of knickers is to prevent clothing from becoming soiled, the rising demand for lingerie has led to the creation of more fashionable varieties of knickers. Lady Duff-Gordon of Lucile was the first person to design lingerie that liberated women from restrictive corsets. Victoria’s Secret was founded in 1977 and created knickers and sleepwear that were both fun and practical for daily wear.
