Following their triumph, they appeared on Wake Up London and Channel 4’s The Tube, the latter of which is remembered for an iconic moment in which Smart, dressed as a hotel bellboy and acting like a great dane, licked the face of host Paula Yates.
They returned to Channel 4 after three years to present an American football programme. Eddie Izzard, another comedian, recalled Smart as a “very funny man and a great improviser” and led the outpouring of condolences.
Dara Briain, an Irish presenter and comedian, referred to Smart as “a force of joy” and stated that the world “will sorely miss” him. The comedian Milton Jones was shocked by the news. It appears that few people can discover the same joy in front of and behind the camera as he did. I will never forget his contagious smile.
The actor and comedian Rufus Hound was “absolutely devastated” by the news, writing: “Others will speak of his talent, but simply one of the great MEN has passed away. Today there is less light due to a desire for all forms of merriment. I will raise a glass to him tonight. What a boy!”
