Walmart Faces Potential Payouts of Up to $500 to Customers in $45 million Lawsuit: Are you Eligible?

Walmart in Florida has been accused of using unfair business practices for years, causing customers to lose up to $500.

Walmart $500: People who bought certain groceries at Walmart in the last six years may be able to get up to $500 from the big box store. But the deadline to file a claim is coming up fast: June 5.

According to CNBC, a Florida class action lawsuit says that “Walmart uses unfair and deceptive business practices to deceivingly, misleadingly, and unjustly pilfer and pocket its customers’ hard-earned grocery dollars for its financial gain.”

Anyone who bought “weighted goods” or “bagged citrus” from Walmart between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, can file a claim to get a piece of Walmart’s planned $45 million settlement. Plus, you don’t even need your receipts to get your settlement money.

“Weighted goods” are things that are priced based on their weight, even though their weight doesn’t change often. Packaged meat, poultry, pork, and seafood are all examples of weighted goods. “Bagged citrus” means bags of oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, and other citrus fruits.

The lawsuit says that Walmart’s point-of-sale machines lied about how heavy items were when they were marked with a “Rollback” price. This is said to have made the total price more than the advertised discount price.

Who can get cash from Walmart’s settlement?

As part of the $45 million settlement, some Walmart customers may be able to get up to $500 in cash.

The website for the settlement says that you might be eligible if you bought weighted goods and/or bagged citrus in person at Walmart, Walmart Supercenter, or Walmart Neighborhood Market in the U.S. or Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024.

That amount will depend on how much you spent on those things at a Walmart store during that time. Based on the settlement website, these are the possible payouts.

  • $10: If you’re approved and can’t show receipts, proof of purchase, or other proof, but you can say you bought up to 50 weighed goods and/or bagged citrus,
  • $15: If you’re approved but don’t have receipts, other proof of purchase, or other paperwork, but you can say you bought 51 to 75 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus in person,
  • $20: If you’re approved and can prove you bought 76 to 100 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus in person but don’t have receipts, proof of purchase, or other proof, you can still get the discount.
  • $25: If you’re approved but don’t have receipts, other proof of purchase, or other paperwork, but you can say that you bought 101 or more weighted goods and/or bagged citrus,
  • $500: If you are approved and can show proof of purchase, such as a receipt, for each Weighted Good and/or Bagged Citrus purchased in-person at a Walmart Store during the Settlement Class Period, along with the amount paid for each Weighted Good and/or Bagged Citrus Purchased, you will be entitled to 2% of the total cost of the Weighted Goods and Bagged Citrus Purchased, up to a maximum of $500.

You have until June 5, 2024, to file a claim online or by mail. The form will ask for your name, address, phone number, and whether you have receipts for the things you bought.

The settlement’s website says that if you are approved for a cash payout, you will get it through a direct deposit, a Zelle transfer, or a Venmo transfer.
