The advantages of registering an Opal device

You have associated your personal information with a registered the card. Consequently, you may:

  • You can protect your balance by blocking access to your card if it is lost or stolen, preventing anyone else from using your funds.
  • You can transfer the remaining balance from a misplaced, compromised, or stolen card to an alternative card.
  • Users can set up registered cards to automatically top up when the card’s balance is low, eliminating the need to manually reload funds.
  • Access and download your activity report to view a record of your card activity for the past 18 months. You can monitor your spending and share your activity statement with a third party, such as your employer or accountant.
  • Select to receive SMS or email alerts if your account balance becomes depleted or if an automatic top-up is initiated.
  • Link multiple Opal cards: You can link multiple cards to a single account so that you can manage and view them all from a single location, allowing you to keep track of all the cards for your family or household.

Examining the activity statement in Opal

Activity on your card is a log of all transactions that have occurred with that card. It displays your excursions, journeys, top-ups, and adjustments, allowing you to monitor your spending, verify that you paid the correct fare, and use it to file tax returns for business travel.

The website activity statement may not reflect all activities and balance for up to forty-eight hours.

If you do not tap on or off, the system will charge you the maximum default fare and mark your origin or destination as ‘unknown’. As an incomplete voyage, this does not contribute to the accumulation of your weekly travel reward.

On your bank statement, any Opal transactions, including card top-ups, that contain the symbols ‘TfNSW’ and ‘Opal’ in the transaction description will be identifiable.
