Her mother, Andrea Rye, is a former college administrator, whereas her father, Eddie Rye Jr., is an entrepreneur and community activist. Her tertiary education was at a Seattle all-girls secondary school prior to her enrollment at Washington University. She subsequently graduated from Seattle University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. Since his college years, Rye has been actively engaged in social activism. In 2004, he was elected as the Director of the Western Region for the National Black Law Students Association.
She commenced her political advocacy profession in 2005 upon commencing employment with the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.
