Ludwig van Beethoven Biography:

Early Life

Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770, in Bonn, Germany. Mozartmeister was his grandfather’s job as the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne’s music director at Bonn. Johann van Beethoven, who was born around 1740 and died in 1792, worked at the same court as a tenor singer and musician. His mother was the head cook at the house. Ludwig only had two other siblings left alive: Caspar Anton Carl (born 1774) and Nikolaus Johann (born 1776). Ludwig’s dad really wanted his son to improve his musical skills, but he went too far. His oldest son spent so much time practicing the piano that he didn’t have much time for the other things kids need to learn to grow up to be well-rounded adults. Many things could not be done against Johann’s will because he was angry and drunk.

Career

Ludwig continued to learn music at the court of Cologne starting in 1779, where the organist and composer Christian Neefe taught him. Ludwig did well, so in 1781 he was made junior court organist. The next year, he was made harpsichordist for the court orchestra. Ludwig was already writing his own music when his teacher kept track of it all and released a set of keyboard variations in 1782.

In 1783, three of Ludwig’s piano sonatas were made public. Ludwig did the right thing by dedicating his sonatas to the Elector. The Elector died that year, but the next one kept Ludwig in the court orchestra. In Vienna, which was the musical capital of Europe at the time, Böhm quickly made a name for himself as a great improviser.

Ludwig was set to go to Vienna in 1787 to take lessons from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Beethoven’s mother got sick, so he had to go back home after only two weeks, even though he made it to Vienna. Ludwig couldn’t get back to Bonn in time to save his mother, who probably died of tuberculosis. Because Johann van Beethoven was getting worse with drunkenness and grief in 1789, Ludwig had to take over running the family business, which included managing half of his father’s salary.

In 1792, Ludwig was permitted to study with Joseph Haydn (1732–1809), who was also in Vienna. This was his second chance to learn from a master. Mozart and Haydn’s music both had an influence on Beethoven at the beginning of his career as a composer. Johann Georg Albrechtsberger’s (1736–1809) teachings were also beneficial to him, especially when it came to counterpoint.
