Thus, France ruled the west and Spain the remainder. Hispaniola is the Latinized name of the island. Hispaniola became typical for describing the entire island in historical accounts and official letters.
The French Revolution in 1784 prompted free people of color in French-occupied ‘Hispaniola’ to fight the French. Though Napoleon Bonaparte’s army was powerful, the people won. Haiti was named after the island’s first peoples by revolutionary hero Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
