Four Chaplains Day 2024: Every year on February 3, Four Chaplains Day is observed to honor four Army chaplains who showed courage, selflessness, and compassion while serving on a sinking ship.
Packed to capacity, the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was sailing the Atlantic Ocean in 1943. A German submarine launched a torpedo at the ship, causing it to sink and killing all 300 people on board.
Four Chaplains Day History
Reverend George L. Fox of the Methodist faith, Jewish Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Father John P. Washington of the Catholic faith, and Reverend Clark V. Poling of the Dutch Reformed Church were the four chaplains on board the ship. Numerous witnesses recall their bravery, encouragement, and prayers for the numerous frightened individuals on board.
Knowing they would soon meet their maker, they handed their life jackets to four people in need.
Founded under the guiding principle of not discriminating based on religion, the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation promotes interfaith harmony. Purple Hearts and Distinguished Service Crosses were awarded to them in 1944. As they had not engaged in active combat with the enemy, they were not eligible for the Medal of Honor.
Congress consequently established the “Special Medal for Heroism” as a worthy replacement.
Numerous military groups and organizations across the nation have observed Four Chaplains Day since the bombing on February 3, 1943. In 1998, a senate resolution was enacted to officially acknowledge Four Chaplains Day on the 55th anniversary of the occurrence.
