Have a Heart Day 2024: February 14 is designated as Have a Heart Day. The First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada hosts the annual event. Marching to the parliament, activists, organizers, and members of the community voice their opposition to the marginalization and persecution that Canada’s Indigenous people experience. The day is centered around the idea of reconciliation and the part that people should play in pressuring the government to modify its institutional framework. The goal of National Have a Heart Day is to launch a movement that gives First Nations children’s lives enduring transformation and an abundance of love, respect, and equitable chances.

History Of Have a Heart Day

Have a Heart Day is a bigger initiative under the direction of First Nations Child and Family Services of Canada. Since its founding in 1998, the organization has worked to increase public awareness of the injustices faced by Aboriginal children. Additionally, it provides the victims’ relatives with links to resources and assistance. Individual action and reconciliation are the foundation of the day. The main goal of addressing the struggles experienced by Aboriginal families is to create a bridge between communities.

Like everyone else, Aboriginal families should have an equal opportunity at life. Unfortunately, the offspring of Canadian Indigenous peoples who identify as “First Nation,” meaning they are neither Métis nor Inuit, are being forced into a life of crime and punishment. For whatever reason, even though they make up only 3.8% of the Canadian population, 23% of prisoners are Aboriginal.

The National Have a Heart Day Campaign’s increased efforts in recent years have resulted in significant victories for Canada’s Indigenous population. The group succeeded in obtaining fines of $40,000 for the deliberate and careless disregard for First Nations children and their families. To involve more individuals in the process of guaranteeing justice for the Indigenous populations, the Reconciling History Initiative has also introduced additional educational possibilities.

Over the past few decades, numerous protests have been held on this day. Thousands of Canadians have protested for justice and reparations for their indigenous neighbors by marching to the parliament’s marble floor.

Observe and celebrate Have a Heart Day

Discuss reconciliation techniques.

Reconciliation via conversation, understanding, and empathy heals our divisions. On National Have a Heart Day, non-Aboriginal people have the unique opportunity to show our support and generosity towards our Aboriginal neighbors.

Contribute to Native American groups

Promoting their fundraisers and regularly contributing to organizations like the Indian Residential School Survivors Society and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada are the finest ways to provide useful assistance to Indigenous people.

Demonstrate in favor of indigenous rights in government

Aboriginal rights have come a long way since the 2007 tribunal verdict and the Canadian prime minister’s acknowledgment of it. On February 14, send a letter of agreement to your member of parliament to support Indigenous people in their struggle for complete enfranchisement.

Five Facts Regarding Canada’s Indigenous Population

  • For the past 25 years, more than 20% of First Nation communities have not had access to clean, pure drinking water.
  • Residential schools in Canada were used to indoctrinate Aboriginal children with western ideas until the early 1990s.
  • Forty of the First Nation communities lack academic facilities or schools, demonstrating the pervasive mistrust of education in these communities.
  • A First Nation student’s chances of graduating from college are higher than their chances of going to jail.
  • Compared to non-Aboriginal youth of the same age, First Nation youth have a suicide rate that is seven times higher.

Why It’s Important to Have a Heart Day

It emphasizes individual action.

The goal of National Have a Heart Day is to promote reconciliation. As we mobilize for institutional reform, we also need to emphasize the importance of taking individual action. We can all make a difference by raising our voices and reaching out.

It’s a request for healing.

The day generates money to provide a secure living, a proper education, and nourishment for the children of Aboriginal people.

A wish for transformation

Significant progress has been achieved following the historic decision in favor of Aboriginal rights in 2016. Since May 2017, more than 691,000 goods and services have been allocated to First Nation households under the non-compliance order. February 14 is a fantastic day to take stock of our progress while we continue to struggle for change.
