Magic Day 2023: On October 31, rather than Halloween, the limelight will be on Magic Day. National Magic Week, an entire week devoted to the celebration of the craft of magicians worldwide and the art of allusion, includes Magic Day. Moreover, although Harry Houdini may be the most renowned illusionist in history, this week and day have much to be thankful for.
The origins of Magic Day
Wasting rabbits from hats and performing disappearing acts alongside magicians and their assistants may appear to be juvenile antics, but did you know that the first recorded conjuring act occurred in ancient Egypt, where magic as we know it today originated?
Surprisingly, magic has exerted a considerable influence throughout history, particularly in Western societies; from the earliest magic acts and feats to the more notorious witch hunts, and even to the current fascination with fantasy and illusions in literature.
In the Middle Ages, magic was regarded as malevolent, a belief that persisted until the Salem witch trials in the late 17th century in the United States. During this period, women were put to the test for their witchcraft by being thrown into a lake; those who could swim were executed; those who could not face the risk of drowning with a clear name were considered to be witches.
Magic performances evolved into a social activity during the middle of the 19th century, reaching their zenith with masters such as Harry Houdini, who dominated the field until his passing in 1926. In fact, his demise was the impetus for the establishment of Houdini Day, which the Society of American Magicians subsequently renamed Magic Day. It ultimately culminated in the conclusion of their Magic Week!
