Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023: On the same day that Manipur, one of India’s seven sister states, celebrated its foundation day, Meghalaya, another hilly state located between beautiful valleys, will celebrate its foundation day on January 21, 2023.
Meghalaya Foundation Day: History
The northeastern region of India was carved out by two districts on January 21, 1972: Assam, the Garo hills, and the United Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills. The Northeastern Region (Re-Organization) Act of 1971 elevated it to the status of a state.
Meghalaya, the name speaks for itself – A land of clouds, the home of clouds – and it shares its borders with seven sister states of India, including Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, and Tripura.
It is the wettest region in the country, and approximately 70% of the state is forested. The most widely spoken languages are Khasi, Garo, Pnar, and English.
Meghalaya’s statehood day celebrations include cultural events. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s foundation day celebrations will be low-key.
With an area of 22,430 square kilometres, Meghalaya is one of the most beautiful states in India, surrounded by natural wonders and splendour.
