Mother’s Day in Panama 2023: History
In Panama, Mother’s Day is a public holiday. It is celebrated on December 8, which is also the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, in the Roman Catholic Church. The idea for Mother’s Day on December 8 came from the wife of Florencio Harmodio Arosemena, the president of Panama at the time. In 1930, Panama celebrated Mother’s Day on December 8 for the first time.
Other retellings of the history assert that the Rotary Club established Mother’s Day in Panama. In 1924, the Rotary Club suggested celebrating Mother’s Day on May 11 of each year. However, politicians in Panama changed the proposal to make Mother’s Day fall on December 8.
According to a third interpretation of the holiday’s history, liberal Panamanians who wished to uphold the separation of church and state opposed Catholics’ efforts to declare the Feast of the Immaculate Conception a national holiday. They reached a mutually agreeable compromise to observe Mother’s Day on December 8th.
Whichever of these is true, Mother’s Day is now observed as a public holiday in Panama. Every Panamanian seizes the chance to show their appreciation, love, and respect to the women who gave birth to them.
On Mother’s Day, mothers will receive gifts from their families, which may include chocolates, prepared meals, flowers, or heartfelt notes and poems expressing gratitude. While other family members take care of their regular tasks, many mothers will also be granted the day off from housework.
