National Joshua Day 2023: Joshua Day is every year on December 25. Joshua is doing lots of things at once. Some of you may know him as the friendly Josh, who is always happy, normal, and comfortable. In Abrahamic faiths, the name has a lot of weight and meaning. After all, he was Moses’ right hand, and he led the Israelites to the promised land. It looks like the good work has lived on. These Joshuas are not only leaders everywhere they go, but they’re also our best people.
What National Joshua Day Is All About
The name Joshua sounds wise and important, which is probably what you’d expect from its roots. Joshua comes from the Hebrew name Yehoshua, which means “God saves me.” ‘Yeho’ means God and ‘ shua’ means deliverance or safety.
It is a name that people who know a lot about the “Old Testament” of the “Bible” will recognize. Joshua went with Moses to Mount Sinai to get the “Ten Commandments.” Joshua and twelve other spies set out for Canaan to find the Promised Land. Moses died, and Joshua took over as leader of the Israelites. Joshua led the march into Canaan.
The letter ‘Y’ in Yehoshua changed into the Latin letter ‘I’ as time went on. It was changed to Iesus. A long time later, the letter “I” was changed to a “J,” and the name became Jehoshua. Eventually, it became the name Joshua that most people in English know today. It is a religious name, but it has a word in most other languages that means the same thing. For example, the Spanish word for it is Joaquin, and the Hawaiian word for it is Iokua. Finally, we would be wrong if we didn’t talk about Josh, the cute nickname that everyone knows and loves.
Joshua has been a popular boy’s name in the U.S. since the 1970s. Joshua made it to the top 10 in 1979 and stayed there for 30 years. Also, Joshuas seems to be at the top of lists for things other than baby names these days, like music, movies, sports, and more. We honor their accomplishments on National Joshua Day. We hope that all Joshuas know how great they are.
