History of National Panchayati Raj Day 2023
In 1959, under the supervision of the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajasthan was the first state in India to implement the Panchayati Raj System. The 73rd Amendment to the Constitution, which was ratified on April 24, 1993, provided official recognition of this system.
In 1957, a committee emerged under the direction of Balwantrai Mehta to examine the evolution of the Panchayati Raj in India. The recommendation of the committee was to establish a three-tiered Panchayati Raj system consisting of Gramme Panchayats at the Village level, Panchayat Samitis at the Block level, and Zila Parishads at the District level.
Panchayati Raj received constitutional status by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1993, following years of debate and the recommendations of numerous other committees, including the Ashok Mehta Committee, the Gadgil Committee, and the L.M. Singhvi Committee, among others.
