National Roof Over Your Head Day 2023: The United States has a very important holiday every year on December 3: National Roof Over Your Head Day. National Roof Over Your Head Day comes right after Thanksgiving, which is another reason to be thankful. It asks us to be thankful for what we have, starting with the roof over our heads, because many other people don’t have this basic need. Today is a beautiful lesson to be happy with what we have and not worry about what we don’t have.

National Roof Over Your Head Day: History

While we are still trying to figure out where today came from, the history of homelessness in the United States is very clear.

In colonial America, people who didn’t have a place to live were called “sturdy beggars” in the middle of the 18th century and “vagrants” in the 1600s. There were a lot of these kinds of people in most colonial places, like Baltimore and Philadelphia. King Philip’s War (also known as the First Indian War) against the colonial people in 1676 may lead to this situation. The war forced many people to leave their homes and find shelter elsewhere. Not as many people lived in major towns; only about 7% of Americans did.

This changed during the industrial revolution, which sent a lot of people to cities to work. It was stated that there were more homeless people in big cities in the 1850s than ever before, and the only place for them to stay was in police stations.

As time went on, more and more people of different races, nationalities, and ages came looking for refuge. Over the years, the ways to handle this kind of problem have also changed: In the early 1900s, people thought that jobs were the answer. These days, they think that building affordable homes is the answer.

In the U.S. alone, there are still up to 100 million people who don’t have a place to live. This is probably why the Day was made. Many states have come up with creative ways to solve this problem, and they are still coming up with and implementing plans to make sure that everyone in America has a place to live.
