National Youth Day Albania 2023: On December 8, Albania observes National Youth Day. It pays tribute to the early 1990s student uprisings against the harsh dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. Demanding political reform, students from what was once Enver Hoxha University—now known as the University of Tirana—marched through the streets of the city.
On December 8, 1990, the march got underway, but by December 11, there were 3,000 protestors, forcing Mr. Ramiz Alia, Hoxha’s predecessor, to meet with the students in an attempt to calm the unrest.
National Youth Day Albania 2023: Background
In recognition of all the students who took part in the events of December 1990 and all Albanian youth, the Albanian Parliament has designated December 8 as a national holiday since 2009. After World War I, the Iron Curtain fell, transforming Albania into the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania.
Its government, despite never having been a part of the Soviet Union, combined a strong degree of state administration and control with a Marxist Communist strategy. Albania consequently became a remote nation and among the hardest to travel to in the world. When it came to economic performance, it was undoubtedly one of the most successful communist governments, even though it was heavily dependent on loans from other socialist countries.
But the state also suppressed a number of liberties, such as the freedom to practice one’s religion and politics. It outlawed Christmas in 1967 and proclaimed itself the first atheist nation in history.
The fall of the Berlin Wall and the Romanian protest movement that resulted in the execution of Nicolae Ceauşescu as its leader terrified Albanian leaders. The Helsinki Agreement improved human rights and replaced the Warsaw Pact.
Throughout 1990, there had been several protests in different locations, but on December 8, 1990, students in Tirana, the capital city, planned a rally. The students marched for national political change, but as is so often the case, their concerns about energy depletion quickly took precedence over other, more urgent issues.
Albanian rule was overthrown due to other developments taking place in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union at the time. Still, it was only a matter of time before the nation saw a change in government. The student protests started a smoldering fire.
The demonstrations, which came to be known as the December Movement, forced the Communist Party of Labour of Albania’s Central Committee to endorse political pluralism on December 11, 1990. The Democratic Party, the largest opposition party, was founded the following day.
