Shivaji Jayanti 2024: On February 19, India celebrates the great Maratha emperor Shivaji Jayanti. In Maharashtra, people celebrate the holiday in remembrance of the emperor’s birth and life. This celebration dates back nearly 400 years!
History of Shivaji Jayanti
Say the name Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti three times. The great Maratha emperor of the seventeenth century was known by this name. On February 19, 1630, he was born in the Shivneri fort. He was given the name Shivai in honor of the goddess who granted his mother’s wish for a son.
At the age of seventeen, Shivaji overthrew the forts of Raigad, Kondana, and Torna, and he went on to establish the Maratha empire. At the age of forty-four, he was crowned emperor of Maratha in 1674 in Raigad. Fifty thousand people showed up for it. During his tenure, he encouraged the use of Marathi and Sanskrit in the court. During his reign, he was a skillful warrior and a perceptive leader who managed politics with skill. He was married four times and had eight kids. He passed away at the age of 50 in 1680 from a fever and diarrhea.
Shivaji is a symbol of bravery, liberation, and the struggle for self-rule. Lokmanya Tilak observed the occasion for the first time in Pune in 1895. By drawing attention to Shivaji’s accomplishments, freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar helped popularize the holiday and spread its celebration throughout India. On this holiday, people assemble at the spot where Shivaji was first captured to remember his deeds and accomplishments. We honor his remarkable achievements during his youth and his valiant military strategies, which cemented his position as the Maratha leader.
You can observe the festivities online, raise awareness of the holiday through online activism, and perform a brave deed.
