Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting 2023: This year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is on December 1. It’s an annual event that happens after a Christmas tree is put up at the Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, in mid-November and lit during a public ceremony on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving. The tree lighting ceremony is shown every year on National Broadcasting Corporation, and the Mayor of New York City generally lights the tree.
How The Rockefeller Center Lit Up The Christmas Tree In The Past
In 1931, building workers at Rockefeller Center put up the first Christmas tree there. They decorated the tree with ornaments their families had made to celebrate the holiday.
After two years of the first event, the first official tree was planted. Since then, putting up a Christmas tree on the Rockefeller Plaza every year has become a tradition.
The New York City mayor typically takes the lead in the ceremony that follows the lighting of the Christmas tree each year. Important people, celebrities, and tourists from all over the world come to watch, and the event is often shown on the N.B.C. news channel, where millions of people watch from home and around the world.
The lighting usually starts on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, but the work to get ready starts earlier in November. The chosen tree is moved from where it was picked to the plaza, where scaffolding is put up around it to help hang about 50,000 multicoloured LED lights and the beloved crystal star on top of it.
The trees used for the event have always come from New York and the states nearby, and they are generally gifts. But recently, trees from as far away as Ohio have been brought to the centre in one of the biggest cargo planes that is available.
Erik Pauzé, who is in charge of gardening at the park, often goes tree-hunting in upstate New York and nearby states to find the right tree. He also judges the trees that people send to the centre through its website.
