The purpose of Turn Beauty Inside Out Day, celebrated annually on the third Wednesday of May, is to encourage women and young girls to value their individuality and distinctive qualities and characteristics, and to resist the media’s influence on how a woman’s beauty should be measured. This year, it occurs on May 17. This holiday (created by “New Moon” magazine and Mind and Media) emphasises the need to oppose media beauty standards. Through advertisements, glossy magazines, films, television, and the Internet, children who are highly impressionable are currently exposed to false standards of exterior attractiveness.
The background of Turn Beauty Inside Out Day
As a protest against “People” magazine’s list of the ’50 Most Beautiful People,’ “New Moon” created Turn Beauty Inside Out Day. In the past, “New Moon” has produced a list of ’25 Beautiful Girls’ to counter the former list, emphasising that a woman’s inner attractiveness is more essential than her physical appearance. It is stated that inner beauty comprises “good actions, a good heart, and activism.”
The National Institute on Media and the Family reports that by age 13, 53 percent of adolescent females are unhappy with their appearance. This percentage rises to 78% when they are 17 years old.
The media have practically instilled in females a distorted perception of weight and the compulsion to be thin at all costs, leading them to believe that their self-worth is determined by their weight and how they dress. The majority of these girls observe successful, but excruciatingly thin, celebrities securing prominent television and film roles. This compulsion causes food disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa.
By commemorating Turn Beauty Inside Out Day, women and young girls are encouraged to focus on the concept of inner beauty. This holiday also aims to educate the public about how the media negatively affects girls’ and young men’s and boys’ perceptions of women in general.
5 FACTS ABOUT INNER AND OUTER BEAUTY
The disposition and personality attributes of a girl, such as kindness, generosity, humility, thoughtfulness, compassion, truthfulness, and selflessness, disclose her inner beauty.
Because they are founded on love, respect, trust, and genuine concern for one another, enduring relationships are founded on the inner attractiveness of individuals.
Unlike physical beauty, which diminishes over time, inner beauty improves if a woman has internalised trustworthiness, inner confidence, and compassion, and has developed a sense of humour.
According to the “Bible” (1 Peter 3:3-4): “What matters is not your outer appearance — the way you style your hair, the jewellery you wear, or the cut of your clothes — but your inner disposition.”
The physical attractiveness of a woman diminishes over time, but not her virtue.
