Day Of The Virgin Of Guadalupe History

The legend of Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which traces a significant turning point in Mexican history, is one of miracles and faith. Following their conquest of Mexico, the Spaniards desired to convert the native Indian population to Catholicism. However, because the Mexicans had their own religion and spirituality, which they firmly believed in, the Spaniards faced numerous challenges. However, once the legend of Juan Diego and the Virgin of Guadalupe gained prominence, native people began to grow increasingly interested in Catholicism.

On December 12, 1531, as a young indigenous Indian named Juan Diego was making his way toward the Hill of Tepeyac, the Virgin Mary appeared to him and stopped him. Diego claimed that the Virgin Mary was a young lady who resembled the women in his neighborhood more than anyone else. She had dark skin and black hair. She gave Diego an order to approach the Bishop and request that he erect a church on Tepeyac Hill. Diego then hurried to inform the Bishop of what the Virgin Mary had revealed to him. He asked to have a church built on Tepeyac Hill, but the Bishop initially did not believe him.

The Virgin Mary once more confronted Diego and gave him instructions to collect flowers from the hilltop. Diego was aware that there wouldn’t be any flowers at the rocky hill because it was December. Upon reaching the summit, he discovered it was smothered in exquisite, vibrant flowers! Recalling his instructions, he gathered the flowers and put them in his coat. Taking the flowers, he made another appointment with the Bishop. When Diego gave the bishop the coat filled with flowers, the bishop saw that the image of the Virgin Mary had been miraculously traced on the coat.

The Bishop knew Diego had been telling the truth when he saw the image of the Virgin and the unusual flowers. The bishop gave the go-ahead for construction of the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City.
