G.I. Joe Day 2024: Every year on February 1, we observe G.I. Joe Day. Since their release in 1964, boys have always preferred these action figurines. The mobile toy was available in many superhero versions, each with its unique persona, but they all shared the same theme: action. This was the best-selling toy targeted at boys and it set the standard for other toys to follow. Did you know that the original meaning of G.I. was “galvanized iron”?
The Background of G.I. Joe Day
Since Hasbro, a toy corporation, first released the toy on the market in February 1964, February 1st is designated as G.I. Joe Day. Stanley Weston, a toymaker, thought that a toy should be made for males, much as Barbie was made for girls. This led him to design the toy.
The G.I. Joes revolutionized the toy business and captured the imagination of people worldwide, making this concept one of the best in toy history.
During the Second World War, American soldiers were referred to as G.I. Joes. The acronym G.I. stands for “government issue” or “general issue.” Hasbro’s action figurines with a military motif were given this moniker. Initially, the toy came in three separate models: Action Pilot, Action Sailor, and Action Soldier, each of which represented a different army branch.
Action Nurse, a female variant, was also released. However, later on, more recent iterations and versions were produced. The 3.75-inch model was released in 1982 and quickly became the industry standard.
In 1983, the G.I. Joe action toys were turned into a television cartoon series. In 2009, a film was also made on the toy. To publish a comic based on the toy line, Hasbro and Marvel Comics combined. Numerous video games featuring distinct plots centered around action figure characters have been developed. Although the rarest models, such as Snake Eyes and Action Nurse, are highly valuable and sell for over $10,000, the toy collection has become increasingly uncommon. Additionally, Hasbro debuted the 6-inch G.I. Joe Classified series of action figures in 2020, and fans and collectors have found them to be extremely popular.
