Holiday Hugs Day 2024: Every year on February 1st, Atlanta Blood Services observes Holiday Hugs Day as a way to express gratitude to all of the donors who took part in blood donation campaigns throughout the hectic Christmas and New Year’s seasons. These donors are often those who regularly donate blood to the blood bank and who maintained the practice of giving their platelets on a four-month streak the previous year. One of the primary components of the immune system, platelets are blood cells that aid in the body’s defense against illnesses and infections.

Holiday Hugs Day’s History

One of the most vital bodily fluids we have is blood. It is the fluid that facilitates the proper functioning of the circulatory system and helps deliver oxygen to every cell in the body. The lungs ensure that the cells receive oxygen and expel carbon dioxide, the harmful byproduct of the chemical reaction that delivers oxygen to the body, while the heart pumps blood throughout the body. Since the blood that is full of oxygen flows through the arteries, arterial blood tends to be brighter, while venous blood is darker because the blood that is full of carbon dioxide flows through the veins. Typically, this is the blood that is drawn for testing.

The blood carries cells that are vital to our health in addition to aiding in the transportation of oxygen. These are a component of our immune system, which maintains the health of our bodies by spontaneously curing infections and healing wounds. In addition to carrying a variety of nutrients and hormones, blood also aids in controlling body temperature. Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma make up its composition.

Platelets are the primary component of blood required by patients undergoing bone marrow transplants or blood treatments for blood cancer. Platelets are fragments of cells that cluster together in response to bleeding, stopping the bleeding. For example, patients with leukemia have extremely low platelet counts, which increases the risk that they won’t be able to fight off infections or inflammations and lowers their immunity even further. For this reason, giving blood is crucial for these individuals. They can restore a significant portion of the count they lost after treatment.
