The History Of St. Patrick’s Day

Patrick is a boy’s name that comes from Latin, like many other well-known names. In ancient Rome, there were two main social groups: the plebeians, who were commoners, and the patricians, who were wealthy people. Because of this, the name Patrick is thought to come from the Celtic names “Padraig” and “Mac Phadraig,” which both mean “son of Patrick.” It is a given name that comes from the Latin word patricius, which means “son of a noble father” or “member of the patrician (noble) class.” What was the name of the Romano-British apostle and patron saint of Ireland in the fifth century? His name was St. Patrick, and he is famous for bringing Christianity to Ireland.

During the Middle Ages, the name was very common, mostly because of how well-known and powerful St. Patrick was. But Patrick wasn’t a popular name for boys in the U.S. A study from the U.S. Social Security Administration (S.S.A.) in 1919 found that only 820 kids had the same first name. In the meantime, the name “Patrick” was found 677,408 times in the S.S.A. public database between 1880 and 2018.

Patricks are great at many jobs, but especially in the arts, sports, politics, athletics, and writing. Comedian and satirist Pat Paulsen, who died in 2009, was given this name, as well as English stand-up comedian Pat Condell, American actors Patrick Dempsey, Patrick Duffy, and Patrick Swayze (1952–2009), Irish actors Patrick Magee and Patrick McDonnell, and English actors Patrick Macnee and Patrick Troughton (1920–1987).
