Nelson Anniversary Day 2024: Every Monday that comes closest to February 1 is Nelson Anniversary Day, a celebration honoring the New Zealand Company’s founding of the Nelson settlement on February 1, 1842. It falls on January 29 of this year. Did you know that the native Māori people lived on the city site before Nelson was established? They called it “Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Maui” (The Prow of the Canoe of Maui). Nelson, a city on Tasman Bay’s eastern coasts, is sometimes referred to as “Whakatu” in Māori. The city is well-known for its beaches, bays, and the world’s cleanest freshwater springs in addition to its local arts and crafts culture. The second-oldest established city in New Zealand is Nelson.

Nelson Anniversary Day History

Nelson’s history began when the Māori people, the region’s original settlers, arrived in the 12th century. The Mori, who mined argillite and developed the surrounding lands, lived in the Nelson-Marlborough districts, also known as “Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Maui.” The ‘Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri,’ a subgroup of the Māori tribe, engaged in battle against other subgroups in the early 1600s in an attempt to take control of the tribe. But, their hegemony persisted until the early 1800s, when the local populace was wiped out and the region was taken over by a northern tribe under the leadership of “Te Rauparaha.”

Under the command of Captain James Cook, the British set out for New Zealand in January 1770, and they traveled as far as the Nelson region. Throughout the voyage, Captain Cook gave the names Queen Charlotte Sound and Ship Cove to the locations on land and Cook Strait to the sea that separates the North and South Islands. For their latter trips to New Zealand in 1773 and 1777, the latter served as their landing place. Following the signing of a treaty with the Ngāi Tahu chiefs in May 1840, the British asserted their ownership over the whole South Island.

The New Zealand Company established their settlement at Wellington and then started searching for more arable land to settle on. When the New Zealand Company agents arrived at the Kapiti shore, they bargained with “Te Rauparaha” and bought land from him. Fifeshire sailed from London on September 17, 1841, bringing with her the first wave of European immigrants. On February 1, 1842, it arrived in Nelson, having lost over a dozen passengers. Nelson Anniversary Day was first observed annually with the arrival of the European settlers.
