This year, April 14 is RAINN Day. RAINN Day is an annual event sponsored by the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, to promote the organisation’s ongoing mission to prevent sexual violence against young men and women on college campuses. April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, has a date that fluctuates from year to year. RAINN Day events are intended to educate students and their colleagues about sexual assault and harassment prevention and to provide survivors with recovery support.
Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, this year’s RAINN Day events will take place virtually instead of on college and university campuses, where they have always been conducted.
The background of RAINN Day
The organisation behind RAINN Day, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, recently (in 2019) celebrated 25 years of providing assistance and hope to college survivors of sexual violence. RAINN is altering how people think about and respond to sexual violence in general by shedding light on a subject that most people find unpleasant to discuss.
Scott Berkowitz, a publishing entrepreneur, founded RAINN in 1994 after becoming embroiled in the issue at the urging of a friend. After hearing firsthand from survivors and volunteers, his original vision for RAINN was to establish a telephone hotline for victims. After twenty-six years, RAINN is the nation’s foremost authority on sexual violence. The current scope of RAINN’s work includes coordinating a national 24-hour phone hotline and an online chat hotline where victims can access confidential assistance, providing community education, and working to improve public policy at both the state and federal levels.
More than three million young men and women whose lives were devastated by sexual violence have called the National Sexual Assault Hotline since its inception. Multiple press releases have been issued in support of and on behalf of survivors confronting media scrutiny, such as Dr. Blasey Ford.
